(July 19) Denver Sues Church For Access To New Mountain Park

The City of Denver is threatening to use eminent domain against a local church that has refused to sell it access to the only road leading into its new mountain park.

In 2021, the Axton family donated its 448-acre ranch to Denver for use as the city’s 23rd mountain park and its first new mountain park since 1939. The land is in far northern Jefferson and Gilpin counties, just south of Boulder County. It includes expansive meadows, ponds, a creek and one slice of a historic trail built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

(July 18) Catholic Diocese Of Ogdensburg Files For Bankruptcy Following More Than 100 Sexual Abuse Lawsuits | Ogdensburg, NY

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg has filed for bankruptcy protection.

In a six-minute video statement, Bishop Terry LaValley said the diocese is facing more than 100 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse.

LaValley went on to say that between August 2019 and August 2021, the state opened the Child Victims Act, and 138 lawsuits that were previously barred by the statute of limitations were filed against the diocese.

While the bankruptcy filing was a difficult decision, LaValley said it was a necessary one.

(July 17) Lawsuit Claims SDPD, SDFD, & Rock Church Negligent In Adopted Girl's Death | San Diego CA

A civil lawsuit filed on behalf of the surviving younger sisters of Arabella McCormack, an 11-year-old adopted girl, describe numerous failures to report and investigate child abuse.

The 27-page lawsuit filed late last week levels accusations at:

The San Diego Police Department & one of its officers
The San Diego Fire Rescue Department & one of its employees
The Rock Church & one of its employees
San Diego County Child Welfare Services and two of its employees
Pacific Coast Academy & two of its employees
The adoptive family: Leticia McCormack, the Estate of Brian McCormack, Adella Tom, & Stanley Tom
