(November 23) Federal Government Intervenes In Lawsuit Over Brookings, Oregon Church Homeless Services | Salem, Ore.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) intervened in a federal lawsuit filed by a Brookings, Oregon church over fines the city threatened to impose because of homeless services historically provided by the church.

The DOJ submitted a statement of interest in the case on Tuesday, calling on the U.S. District Court of Oregon, in which the lawsuit was filed, to rule against the City of Brookings.

(November 22) United Methodist Split: 45 Churches Who Sued Bishop To Disaffiliate File Appeal To State Supreme Court | Alabama

Forty-five United Methodist congregations in south Alabama and the Florida panhandle that filed a lawsuit against Bishop David Graves and the Alabama-West Florida Conference because they were not allowed to disaffiliate from the denomination by an end-of-year deadline have appealed to the Alabama Supreme Court.

The appeal was filed Nov. 13, after Montgomery Circuit Judge Brooke E. Reid dismissed the plaintiffs’ request for a temporary restraining order, saying it was an internal church matter and the court did not have jurisdiction.

(November 20) Archdiocese Of Baltimore Floats Short Window, Comparatively, For Sex Abuse Claims | Baltimore

Soon, a federal judge will make one of the first key decisions in the Archdiocese of Baltimore bankruptcy. How much time should survivors have to file a claim of clergy sex abuse?

An earlier deadline would hasten payments to all survivors, but shorten their window to join in the case. A later deadline would delay their payments, but give them more time to reckon with their trauma and make up their minds.

It’s a balancing act for the court, and the archdiocese attorneys have staked out their starting place for negotiations. They propose a claims deadline of Feb. 26.
